Many jazz giants have used the technique of creating new songs based on the chords of famous pre-existing standards. For example, Charlie Parker wrote Donna Lee based on the chords of (Back Home Again In) Indiana. By creating new melodies and improvisations based on the chord progressions of 10 famous standards, EASING INTO JAZZ (by Noreen Lienhard) guides piano students through the fundamentals of improvisation. The songs are constructed so that the first chorus (i.e., the “new melody”) can be used as a more relaxed improvisation, while the second chorus represents a more complex solo. Jazz solos are often constructed this way, starting simply and then building in tension and complexity. Furthermore, these pieces are also excellent as jazz compositions for recitals.
Piano students will love this book!
